the nba strikes back..
|
| i say its time for a new logo, mr stern.. |
FIVE THINGS TO WATCH FOR THIS SEASON
1) kobe & the lake show - therapist or not, weve got the nbas version of the playmakers thanks to the mailman and the glove joinin this soap opera..
2) lebron - the chosen one finally arrives. i think, like most, im interested in seein this kids game. more magic than michael, how much will he be able to improve this moribund franchise (cleveland)?
3) id like my western conference super-sized please - how many top teams in the west made huge offseason acquisitions? minnesota, dallas, and la are all sportin new starters while the spurs, kings, and rockets sharpened their benches. is there any reason to even have an eastern conference? (oh wait, tmac plays for orlando..)
4) coachin carousel - okay, so there are 29 teams in the nba. an astoundin ELEVEN of em have new coaches this yr (nine are in the eastern conference). wow--guess hirin a new coach is the latest fad in the league since cornrows..
5) kobe - again? yeah, thats how big and bad this wolf is. like i needed to overstate the obvious..
aite, let the fun and games (and scrutiny) begin..

wut once was is no longer..
my computers still busted, so im usin the tried and true laptop that carried esther thru med school..
..
its a little weird but since comin back from hawaii/vacation, i havent really done a good job of readin up on peoples blogs. its not for a lack of interest in their lives or thoughts--i just dont have the inclination. i cant really explain it cuz i luv peekin into peoples minds. but lately, no. maybe its too much fantasy sports..
as we are firmly entrenched in the midst of the football season, so awaits my first luv, basketball, right around the corner. i dont do as many leagues in bball as i use to cuz ive learn to be a little more efficient since it requires more daily effort. but theres still nothin like wakin up to pour over those box scores EVERY beautiful mornin..
wow, im watchin an ancient episode macgyver on tvland--one i havent seen since in probly like ten years. gawd, theres nothin like re-livin ones childhood..
anyways..

| in loving memory (but he'll be back).. |
i realize know one who reads my blog really cares, but im postin all the links here for my benefit so i can sit down and read em all when i have time--or when i get my frickin computer workin..
- some guys blog comments turned forum..
- slate.com's article..
- washington post..
- his apology on his blog..
- more comments..
- the petition to bring him back..
im actually not as disconcerted as i was last nite over my computer--its fixable and i have a few ideas on it. its just gonna require some patience..
but the firin of TMQ will certainly detract from the quality of espn.com. i actually got a couple of my co-workers really into the column--it became the highlight of our week. and now, this mornin we are lamentin this travesty. im sure it will return on some other site (the column originally was on slate.com) but if it doesnt, the loss of TMQ would be a dramatic step back in humanity's quest for progress and nirvana..
this sucks..

and on the seventh day, he raised both hands to heaven and signalled "TOUCHDOWN!!"
i used to hate sundays..
last day of the weekend w/ classes or work lurkin around the corner..
it was even worse when i was a consultant, havin to go to sleep super-early to make the pre-dawn flight out the next mornin..
actually, the worst was when i had to fly out to switzerland cuz the damn plane would leave sun afternoon and i got to joyously go to work as soon i stepped off the red-eye flight..
but now, sundays are awesome..
cuz the the WHOLE DAY is set aside for the greatest invention this side of the world..
football, no less..
w/ fantasy football a close second (haha)..
yeah, work still awaits the next day but it awaits only 30 mins away..
some may think im crazy or a loser..
my wife hates sundays, as im sure all wives do..
actually, i think she hates ME on sundays--we re gonna hafta work on that..
but no matter, sunday is king of the week and its all downhill afterwards..
damn, the day is almost over and i now need to go to bed..
too much football and too much mountain dew (i wish i could hook up an IV to a 2-liter bottle) have given me a headache..
wut am i talkin about?? there can NEVER be too much of a good thing..
=)

back to reality..
doesnt it suck when people dont update their stoopid blogs??
haha, yeah--so im back. back from vacation and back to reality..
i/we have been back since the beginnin of the month. we took off a day earlier than initially planned cuz of the then-impendin hurricane and after spendin several relaxin and feast-filled days in st louis, we headed out for our long-awaited honeymoon to hawaii..
and wow, it was awesome..
optin for a more laid-back vacation, we went to wut is known as the "big island", known for its less urban development, lusher landscape, and volcanic national park (which we did not check out). we stayed in the very posh, very $$$$ four seasons hotel, which probly tripled our enjoyment--fantastic location, exceptional service, and everythin we could ask for. includin an outdoor shower (and yes, it was enclosed)..
spendin about a week there, we tried to stay busy (yeah, right). we canoed out on an outrigger in the ocean. we snorkeled w/ eagle rays and sea turtles (ask esther about the octopus). we went to the must-see lu'au..
but most of all, we just laid out in the sun to swim and tan--and chill. damn, it was so pretty and serene out there--water so blue esther kept sayin it looked like listerine. it was a little more humid than i thought it would be, but did i care? we were in hawaii!!
it was a great time because it was a very relaxin time. and that was, by far, the most important thing--restin and recoverin from life, esp for the wife. oh, and also gettin her a tan..
but now, we are back entrenched in the real world, trudgin along w/ the unnecessities of life and esther back on-call every three nites (amazin, i really dunno how she does it)--hawaii but a faint memory..
and the thing i cant get over is if i liked hawaii so much, wuts stoppin me from livin there? granted, there are the feasibility issues of money and career. but honestly, if i/we really wanted to, we could..
cuz if all we do is work to make money to spend it on vacations like the one we just took, why not just move there?
guess it reminds me of the oft-told story i heard when i first started workin (what will my reward be?)..
..
One day a fisherman was lying on a beautiful beach, with his fishing pole propped up in the sand and his solitary line cast out into the sparkling blue surf. He was enjoying the warmth of the afternoon sun and the prospect of catching a fish.
About that time, a businessman came walking down the beach, trying to relieve some of the stress of his workday. He noticed the fisherman sitting on the beach and decided to find out why this fisherman was fishing instead of working harder to make a living for himself and his family.
"You aren't going to catch many fish that way," said the businessman to the fisherman. "You should be working rather than lying on the beach!"
The fisherman looked up at the businessman, smiled and replied, "And what will my reward be?" "Well, you can get bigger nets and catch more fish!" was the businessman's answer.
"And then what will my reward be?" asked the fisherman, still smiling. The businessman replied, "You will make money and you'll be able to buy a boat, which will then result in larger catches of fish!"
"And then what will my reward be?" asked the fisherman again. The businessman was beginning to get a little irritated with the fisherman's questions. "You can buy a bigger boat, and hire some people to work for you!" he said.
"And then what will my reward be?" repeated the fisherman. The businessman was getting angry. "Don't you understand? You can build up a fleet of fishing boats, sail all over the world, and let all your employees catch fish for you!"
Once again the fisherman asked, "And then what will my reward be?" The businessman was red with rage and shouted at the fisherman, "Don't you understand that you can become so rich that you will never have to work for your living again! You can spend all the rest of your days sitting on this beach, looking at the sunset. You won't have a care in the world!"
The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said, "And what do you think I'm doing right now?"
